Last week I chatted about the first and most important step of Growth Mindset – The Power of Yet.
Following from this comes congratulating effort, not Success.
Focussing your attention on effort rather than success will show your child that trying is far more important than the actual outcome.
Persistence creates power to learn.
Sometimes we become too attached to winning or succeeding that it stops us from even attempting to do something.
For some kids, the pressure of having to win is too much to bear and they crumble. This not only causes unnecessary stress and anxiety, but can lead to an inferiority complex in later life.
Teach your child that effort equals success, not skills or talent.
